MONEY EXCHANGE

The currency of Mexico is the pesos. Mexico’s economy has been stable and continues to improve with the pesos value being between 10 and 11 pesos to one U.S. dollar. Banks generally offer the best rate of exchange.

Banks offer ATMs, as do some of the large city shopping malls and supermarkets. ATM machines and credit cards also provide a way of getting the highest and most current exchange rate.

Most large hotels, restaurants and shops usually honor U.S. currency; however, your exchange rate is usually less than the banks. The smaller shops, beachfront ramadas and souvenir vendors only accept Mexican pesos.

Credit Cards: You can use some of the ATM machines to get cash from your VISA or Master Card; remember to have your pin number. Most upscale businesses and restaurants accept VISA and Master Card; however, not all accept American Express. Most shops will not offer discounts if you are using your credit card.

If you plan to bargain when buying souvenirs, you need to barter with pesos.
